Far From The Madding Crowd
Broad
Channel, the only inhabited island in Jamaica Bay, is home to
a community of less
than 3,000 people.
The
island only one mile long and about four blocks wide
lacks a post office but boasts a volunteer fire department and
a nationally renowned park.
The
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, spread out over 9,000 acres on the
northern part of the island, emcompasses salt marshes, fields,
woods and ponds. Bird watchers and nature lovers are drawn to
the more than 300 species of birds in the park.
